Principles of the World

Updated: Jan 5, 2020

1. NOTHING ENDURES UNCHANGED

In the world of Mutant: Year Zero, everything falls apart or is transformed into something else. The great machines of old now rust silently, useless for anything but deconstruction. The Mutants themselves have had to adapt to the harsh environment after the Crash, and must continuously do so or perish. The life circle of the new world is decay and mutation.

God creates, we mutate.

2. THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH

Not enough resources, not enough food, not enough knowledge of the old world to go around. Everything is reused or repurposed. Nothing is thrown away. While each Mutant is always able to get enough nourishment to survive, they all feel a lack of something - be it stories they haven't heard before, a family of their own or more scrap parts to salvage.

3. SURVIVAL IS ABOUT COMMUNITY

The world after the Crash is a dangerous place, and although the Mutants have rivalries between their groups, they're well aware that community is everything. Only rarely does a Mutant choose to isolate themself. The core values of the Ark are collaboration and communal effort. Disagreements between individuals is one thing, but the Mutants generally try to help each other out.

4. EVERYONE IS WELCOME

Anyone may be a part of the settlement. The Mutants celebrate differences and so do we. No prerequisites exist for joining the Last Ark, and all types of mutants are welcome in the Ark settlement.

5. THE FUTURE IS CO-CREATIVE

The settlement is created through mutual effort and by everyone contributing in a way that feels fun, meaningful and interesting to them. The future of the Ark is determined by what you want it to be, the decisions you make, the changes you make to the island, while you're there.

6. SELF-RELIANCE IS THE BASIS OF ENJOYMENT

Everyone is encouraged to take responsibility for their own experience. We'll give you some tools to create an interesting reality for your Mutant, but in the end, it's up to you how you choose to spend your time on the island.

7. DEATH IS EVER-PRESENT

The Mutants live dangerous lives, and they sometimes die or disappear. That is just a part of life on the Ark. The Rot, the wild creatures that roam uninhabited zones, hostile marauders. Danger lurks everywhere.

8. HOPE NEVER DIES

Mutant: Year Zero isn’t only about pain and suffering. Even in the dark night of the Zone there is always hope. And as the settlement grows, the Mutants continuously seek to create a brighter future for each other.

9. HUMOUR IS A PART OF IT

Gallows humour is a known response to tragedy. And so it is for the Mutants. They live in a grim and gritty world, but that only makes the need for some occasional hilarity greater. Don't be afraid to have fun, even when the times are dark.
